About the Artist
William Gear (1915–1997) was a Scottish painter who studied in Edinburgh and spent a year working under Léger in Paris before the war. Afterward he returned to Paris, fell in with the CoBrA group, and made some of the most energetic abstract work of his career among artists like Appel, Jorn, and Constant. He brought that European avant-garde sensibility back to Britain at a time when most British painting was still looking elsewhere. His compositions are dense and rhythmic, built from interlocking forms and color that holds its ground.
