About the Artist
Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born painter who trained as a military officer before abandoning that life entirely for art. He landed in Munich in 1896 and spent decades in dialogue with Kandinsky, Matisse, and the German Expressionists, absorbing their color and pushing it further. His faces became more distilled with each decade, until they were almost icons. By the end of his life, arthritis had made painting difficult, so he worked smaller and smaller. He never stopped.
