About the Artist
Juan Gris (1887–1927) was a Spanish painter who moved to Paris at twenty-one and became one of the most rigorous minds in Cubism. Where Picasso and Braque worked intuitively, Gris built the picture as a structure first, then let the subject emerge from it. His still lifes are precise and quietly joyful, full of newspapers, wine glasses, and tabletops rendered in color that has no equivalent in nature. He died at thirty-nine. The body of work he left behind in that time is remarkably complete.
