About the Artist
Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker who co-founded Die Brücke in Dresden alongside Kirchner and Schmidt-Rottluff. He painted with more warmth than most of his peers. Color that wants to please as much as provoke, figures that feel inhabited rather than agitated. He traveled to the South Pacific in 1914 looking for the same unmediated life Gauguin had chased, and the work he made there is among the most alive of his career.
