About the Artist
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a German painter and printmaker who co-founded Die Brücke in Dresden in 1905, the group that ignited German Expressionism. He worked with angular, electric line and color pushed to places it had never been before. Street scenes, figures, interiors that crackle with urban energy. His woodcuts are among the most powerful prints of the twentieth century, direct and physical in a way oil paint rarely is. He spent his later years in the Swiss Alps, where his palette opened up and his work found a different kind of intensity.
