About the Artist

Franz Wilhelm Seiwert (1894–1933) was a German painter and graphic artist based in Cologne whose work was inseparable from his politics. He was a communist, and his figures show it: flat, schematic, stripped of individuality in a way that was entirely intentional. He co-founded the Cologne Progressives with Heinrich Hoerle and spent his short career making art that argued.
